A clutch is a mechanical device which provides for the transmission of power (and therefore usually motion) from one component (the driving member) to another (the driven member). The opposite component of the clutch is the brake. If you drive a car with a manual transmission, you may be surprised to find out that it has more than one clutch. Additionally, vehicles with automatic transmission cars have clutches, too.
In a car, you need a clutch because the engine spins all the time, but the car’s wheels do not. In order for a car to stop without killing the engine, the wheels need to be disconnected from the engine somehow. The clutch allows us to smoothly engage a spinning engine to a non-spinning transmission by controlling the slippage between them. A clutch works because of friction between a clutch plate and a flywheel.
Clutches are prone to routine beatings and need to be checked and maintained on a regular basis. Clutch parts wear at different rates depending on the rider’s style and riding conditions. If a driver tends to “ride the clutch” or “burn the clutch” while driving, the clutch will need to be replaced sooner than normal.
